About the numbers: Cross-border charges are not rental prices, border taxes or insurance quotes. Some fees are only indicative because routes, taxes, extras and the number of physical crossings change the total. Published terms can change without notice.
Research is step one.
Get it in writing.
A published rule is only a starting point. Send the rental branch your actual itinerary and ask for a written answer before making a payment.
Copy and send to your rental branch using its official contact channel. Borderwise never sends messages for you.

Routes people actually ask about.
Research starting points for real-world itineraries. The direction matters: Croatia → Bosnia may have different rules than Bosnia → Croatia.
There is no
one-size-fits-all border.
A good travel tool should tell you what it knows, show you the source, and make it obvious what you still need to verify.
Compare actual rental brands
Start with the pickup country, not a blanket EU rule. See distinct policies for each tracked company.
Spot the hidden conditions
See fees, approval steps, insurance documents and vehicle codes—before they surprise you at a border.
Open the original terms
Every researched policy links to the rental provider’s own published terms. Unknowns are marked, never guessed.
A few things worth
knowing.
Can I drive a rental car across a national border?
Sometimes. Permission depends on the company, pickup branch, destination countries, vehicle group and rental contract. “Conditional” in Borderwise means you must obtain any required authorization before traveling.
Do I always need a Green Card?
No universal answer. Insurance proof requirements depend on the countries, vehicle registration and insurer. Some branches issue a Green Card or other international motor insurance evidence; others require a letter of authority or a vehicle entry permit. Ask the rental desk exactly what is needed for your route.
What if I enter a country without permission?
You may breach your rental contract, face charges, lose contractual protections or become liable for recovery costs. Consequences differ by supplier and policy. Check the official terms before crossing.
Are the displayed fees final?
No. The checker uses listed fees from reviewed official terms. Prices may exclude VAT, GST, country road taxes, mandatory insurance, vehicle-specific supplements, or one-way fees. Get a written itinerary-specific quote before payment.
What about rental returns in a different country?
Cross-border driving permission is not the same as permission to return a vehicle abroad. International one-way rentals may be restricted or substantially more expensive. Request a separate one-way quote from the provider.
How current is this information?
The initial source review was conducted on October 30, 2026. That is a review date—not a guarantee the provider will keep the same terms. A branch-specific rental agreement always takes precedence.
